Dennis was one of the leading rookies in the NHL last season. He led the Canucks in goal-scoring last year, and seven of his tallies came on the power play. Dennis had the fantastic total of 58 goals during his final year of junior competition, and the Canucks promptly made him a first round selection in the 1973 Amateur Draft. He had no minor league experience.

In 1973-74, Dennis Ververgaert scored 26 goals for the Vancouver Canucks. He finished fourth in Calder Trophy voting for NHL rookie of the year while outscoring the three players ahead of him: Denis Potvin, Tom Lysiak and Borje Salming. Dennis was the third overall pick at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft behind Potvin and Lysiak (one position ahead of Lanny McDonald).

Ververgaert played three years of major junior hockey with the London Knights from 1970-71 to 1972-73. He scored no less than 39 goals and 87 points in a single season. In 1971-72, his 117 points led the Knights and placed him fourth in the league, nine points behind Don Lever and five points ahead of Steve Shutt. The following year, his 58 goals were the fourth most in the league, nine behind leader Rick Middleton. His 147 points were good for second in the race for the Eddie Powers Trophy.

In the NHL, Dennis would top out with a career best 37 goals and 71 points in 1975-76 with the Canucks. He had four seasons topping the 20 goal plateau, all with Vancouver.

Between 1973-74 and 1980-81, Dennis Ververgaert played 583 regular season and just eight playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals.
