Details

Mike Rogers played three seasons of Major Junior hockey in the WCHL with his hometown Calgary Centennials, 1971-72 to 1973-74. In 1972-73, he scored 54 goals and totaled 112 points playing alongside Danny Gare and Jerry Holland. Rogers tied for ninth in overall scoring, 42 points behind leader Tom Lysiak.

In his third year with Calgary, Rogers upped his totals to 67 goals and 140 points, again with the help of Gare and Holland. This placed him third in overall scoring, 22 points behind leader Ron Chipperfield.

Despite the numbers, he was a lowly fifth round pick by the Vancouver Canucks at the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft. The Edmonton Oilers selected him in the second round of the WHA draft and he opted to stay in Alberta.

As a rookie, Rogers scored an impressive 35 goals and 83 points for the Oilers in 1974-75. Anders Hedberg of the Winnipeg Jets won the Lou Kaplan Award as the top rookie but Mike took home the Paul Deneau Trophy as the league’s most gentlemanly. He sat just a single minor penalty over 78 games.

When the WHA merged into the NHL, Rogers instantly became a star with the Hartford Whalers. In his two seasons with the NHL Whalers, he totaled 105 points in each. However, he was traded to the New York Rangers prior to the 1981-82 season for Chris Kotsopoulos, Doug Sulliman and Gerry McDonald. He didn’t slow down with the Blue Shirts, putting up 103 points in his first year with the club.

Between 1979-80 and 1985-86, Mike Rogers played 484 regular season and 17 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Hartford Whalers, New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers. In the WHA, Mike played 396 regular season and 46 playoff games with the Oilers and Whalers.
