Details

At the time this 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee hockey card came out, Ed Giacomin had been selected as an All-Star three times. He was a First Team All-Star in 1966-67 and made the Second Team in 1967-68 and 1968-69. He would continue this success for the next two seasons, with Second Team honours in 1969-70 and making the First Team in 1970-71.

Giacomin’s shutout success would also carry on. Ed finished his NHL career with 53 blanks, mostly with the New York Rangers but he did have four with the Detroit Red Wings at the end of his NHL career.

In 1969-70, Giacomin recorded six of New York’s seven shutouts with Terry Sawchuk between the pipes for the other. On March 8, 1970, he had the fortune of an old-time goaltending battle that ended in a 0-0 tie. The Rangers were hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins at Madison Square Garden and neither team could score a goal. Al Smith stopped all 33 shots in the Pittsburgh net while Eddie had a bit easier night with 25 saves.

Between 1965-66 and 1977-78, Ed Giacomin appeared in 609 regular season and 65 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings. His jersey number 1 was retired by the Blue Shirts in 1989, two years after he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
