Card Notes

The back of this 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee Ron Ellis hockey card contains just his NHL stats and no additional information on him. However, it does contain a general trivia snippet: Darryl Sittler has led the Leafs in scoring for three straight years.

Darryl Sittler a été le meilleur compteur des Leafs trois saisons d’affilée.

Details

As for the trivia snippet, it’s a little bit of an error. Darryl Sittler led the Toronto Maple Leafs in overall scoring for eight consecutive seasons, starting in 1972-73. He tied Lanny McDonald for the team lead with 90 points each in 1976-77. O-Pee-Chee jinxed him and his streak ended in 1980-81, falling a single point behind Wilf Paiement.

1980-81 was the end of the line for Ron Ellis as a player. After missing two seasons, 1975-76 and 1976-77, he’d made a decent comeback with the team. In his first year back, he scored 26 goals and helped the Buds to their longest playoff run since winning the Stanley Cup in 1966-67. However, his game declined after that and retired for good after playing 27 games in 1980-81.

The last of his 332 regular season NHL goals was scored in his fifth last game. On January 6, 1981 in a 6-3 road loss to the New York Islanders, Ellis scored on Glenn Resch at 9:56 of the third period, assisted by Dave Farrish and Laurie Boschman. Ron’s final goal was definitely overshadowed by John Tonelli‘s five goal performance for the Islanders.

Between 1963-64 and 1980-81, Ron Ellis played in 1,034 regular season and 70 playoff games in the National Hockey League, all with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ellis played in all eight games for Canada at the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union.
