Card Notes

After jumping right into the NHL out of junior hockey, Lanny had a little trouble adjusting to the pro style last season. He came on toward the end of the campaign and the Leafs are hopeful he can crack the 20-goal barrier this season. Lanny had a tremendously successful junior career in western Canada. He can play both wings and is one of the fastest skaters on the team. Lanny was Toronto’s top draft choice in 1973.

Details

Lanny McDonald didn’t quite break the 20-goal barrier in 1974-75 with 17 in an injury reduced 64 games. However, in the following season he nearly doubled up on the mark with 37 goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

McDonald was the fourth overall pick at the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft out of the Medicine Hat Tigers. The only three to be selected ahead of him were Denis Potvin, Tom Lysiak and Dennis Ververgaert. He was coming off a season with 62 goals and 77 assists for 139 points for the Tigers. He finished third in overall scoring, 15 points behind Lysiak, his Medicine Hat teammate.

He certainly did come on toward the end of his rookie 1973-74 NHL season. Although he totaled just 14 goals on the campaign, three of those came on the night of March 30, 1974 against the New York Rangers at Maple Leaf Gardens. In the team’s 74th game of the season, McDonald recorded his first of many NHL hat tricks with all three scored on New York goalie Gilles Villemure. The Leafs won the game 7-4 with Denis Dupere, Brian Glennie, Dave Keon and Darryl Sittler all contributing a goal and assist.

Between 1973-74 and 1988-89, Lanny McDonald appeared in 1,111 regular season and 117 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies and Calgary Flames. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.
